Last Week

I can't believe that this is my LAST week of maternity leave! It's gone by so fast! I was lucky enough to get two extra weeks in addition to the mandatory 6 weeks, so I'll have been off for a full 2 months, but I still can't believe that it's already time to head back. We found a woman that does daycare in her home near our house, and Mia has already spent one morning over there to get her (and me!) acclimated. After doing a few interviews, we're pretty confident that we made the right choice for us and our daughter, but it's going to be a hard transition. In addition to getting used to leaving her with someone else all day, I have to get back into a routine that involves getting up earlier, dealing with both pets, feeding, dressing, and packing up a baby, and then getting over to daycare at a reasonable time so that I can get to work and back by 4:30pm, which is when the baby has to be picked up each day! Yikes! I have a feeling that I'm going to be going through A LOT of coffee!

So what else is new with us? Amelia is holding her head up more and more, and she can even put some weight on her legs when we hold her upright. She's so strong! She's just getting bigger, and her hair is getting even more red and thickening out - so we're fairly certain it's here to stay! She's smiling all of the time, and I've caught a few giggle-like sounds coming from her when we're up in the middle of the night together. She's easily following things (including us) with her eyes, plus she LOVES her swing and vibrating chair and the sound of rattles (she can't quite grasp one yet, but she's getting close!). She seems to like bath time, but does not like her vitamins that she gets at bath time (she immediately puckers her mouth up when the eye dropper gets near her!).

Can't believe she'll be 2 months on Tuesday! Hopefully I'll have time to take some good photos!

Getting Big....

Amelia has outgrown almost all of her newborn clothes and is starting to fit into her 3 month (and some 3-6 month) outfits! We can't believe how big she is getting!

Her 3-6 month snowsuit, however, does not quite fit...

(This one could be entitled "Mia as roadkill.")

My mom came up this weekend to watch her so that David and I could go out for our friends' bachelor and bachelorette parties. We were a little concerned about leaving her for so long (for the first time!), but she was good for grandma (and uncle Dan) and we had a blast with our friends!

Mia meets more family

Mia got to meet her great-grandpa Leonard - they got along just fine!

She also got to spend more time with her uncles Stephen and Daniel - they even took turns giving her a bottle.

Wine update

I'm a bit behind on the wine making update - we started the second fermentation stage last week, which means we should be able to add the finishing products this weekend and then it will just need to age. Here are some photos of the hubby siphoning the must from the primary fermentation container into the secondary fermentation clear glass carboy.

The secondary fermentation allows any remaining sugars to be fermented to alcohol; the wine also becomes clear (hopefully!).

After this stage some wines are aged in oak barrels, however we haven't invested in one yet (I'm sure that's one of the next steps!) so we added oak chips (yes, wood chips) into the fermentation process to get that oak-y flavor. We'll bulk age the wine in the glass carboy for awhile before further aging it in the bottle.

I'll restrain myself here from going into a full-blown lecture on the fermentation process (I've taught the process of beer- and wine-making during my micro fermentation lecture before - because what college student doesn't want to learn about why fermentation is ACTUALLY important?!?), suffice it to say that we're having fun trying out the process ourselves!

Family Resemblance?

When Amelia was born, everyone thought she looked like her daddy, but more recently we've started to see that she's looking more like me. After digging out some old baby photos of each of us, here are some pretty amazing comparisons!

Kids rock!

Had to post this video of Alex and Emory singing and dancing to "We will rock you" - too cute! video

Family Weekend

It was a BUSY weekend! First, we had my parents and my grandma over to introduce Mia to her great-grandma Evie - I think they were pretty enthralled with one another! Grandma even got her to take her first full bottle!

After they left on Saturday afternoon, we had David's family in town for the remainder of the weekend. It was David's brother, Brian, and his wife Jen's first time meeting the baby - plus, she got to meet her cousins, Alex and Emory. The kids thought she was pretty cute and special - Alex held her a few times and they took turns brushing her hair.

"Uncool" David is pretty popular with the kids...

Grandma and Grandpa were excited to get to see her for the first time since she came home from the hospital!

Then, my cousin Niko stopped by for a quick visit on Sunday afternoon and brought all sorts of cute winter outfits for next year, plus an AMAZING red velvet cake for the adults!

All in all, it was a crazy weekend, but it was great getting to introduce our adorable little girl to more of her family! Now that we got everyone back out of our house, Amelia has gotten a bath, I'm catching up on laundry, and I'm hoping she crashes long enough for me to take a long, hot shower and an even longer nap!
