Mia's new hat!

Just purchased this adorable hat for fall at Snuggle Bug Kidz's Etsy shop! So cute! Oh, and my daughter is becoming a total ham for the camera. Love it.

Our update!

We're going to ALASKA in three weeks - literally, 3 weeks from today we'll be on a plane heading to Anchorage! My parents were supposed to be flying my entire family out there next summer for our Christmas gifts, but my mom found half-price tickets a couple of weeks ago, checked with all of us on the off chance that we could all go this summer, and everything just fell into place! We're going for a week, visiting my mom's younger brother and family (who are stationed in Anchorage), checking out Denali National Park, and driving down to Homer, AK so the guys can go halibut fishing (and catch lots of yummy fish to send back home - yay!). Other than a gross idea of what we would like to do (based on my parent's trip to Alaska they took a couple of years ago), we really don't have any plans. So we're trying to buckle down and get everything organized in the next few weeks so that we can have an awesome vacation! David and I are still trying to figure out everything that we'll need to pack for the baby - plus trying to get tips for traveling with her - so if anyone has any suggestions - let me know! We fly to Chicago first, have a brief layover, then fly to Anchorage, which is a 6.5 hour flight!!

Meanwhile, I've started my summer teaching - I was hired on as a lecturer for the undergrad general microbiology course at the U. I teach for the next two weeks - M/W/F, with 5 lectures and 1 exam. The first lecture went well, and I'm looking forward the wrapping up my remaining lectures so that I can get the exam put together! Luckily, my section covers immunity, antimicrobials, pathogenesis, and disease - my favorite topics in the field of micro! I also just received a post-doctoral fellowship through the PNI (PharmacoNeuroImmunology) training grant at the U. It will pay my salary and provide some travel money for the next year, with a (probable) renewal for the following year. Since my background is primarily in microbiology, it will be interesting for me to learn about the other fields - I'll have seminars and courses to sit in on, plus required poster sessions and seminars to present on my own research. It has been a bit of a crazy couple of weeks, though, since I start my fellowship on August 1st and therefore I've been running around getting everything lined up so that my health benefits and taxes, etc. are all ready to go next week.

David is still busy with the fire department. He's also trying to get up to the Velodrome in Blaine once a week for track cycling races. He just found out that he got moved up one category, so this week he'll be racing against better cyclists!

Next week we celebrate our 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY! Thanks to some great friends, we will be able to go out and celebrate next weekend! In addition to that, my college roomies are flying back into town for a wedding, but they're making sure to come stay with us a bit so that they can finally meet Mia! It's going to be a BUSY week next week, but we can't wait!!

Food update

So after a pep talk from my friend, Sara, we decided to start pushing the solids a bit more over the past couple of weeks. We had started Amelia on rice cereal at the end of June and since then she had tried bananas and squash, but she didn't seem to really like any of it all that much. We weren't concerned, so we'd just try feeding her every now and then to see if she was more interested. I had read that avocados were a good baby food, so just out of curiosity I gave her a little bit of avocado out of our guacamole a couple of weekends ago. She really seemed to like it! So we bought a couple of avocados and she's hooked! It's by far her favorite thing that she's tasted yet! We also switched from rice to oatmeal cereal and that made a big difference (she still eats the rice if we give it to her, but she eats more of the oatmeal). To help with her teething, we pulled out the mesh feeder that Sara gave us and popped a chunk of frozen mango in it - she really liked that, too! She did not, however, care for the pears that we put it in (or pureed pears). This week she's trying green beans (not so sure at first, but ate a bit more last night) so we'll see. We also discovered (after Sara assured me that she wouldn't choke) that she can eat little puffs and Cheerios already (the puffs are easier at this point since they kind of dissolve in her mouth), plus she does well with Gerber's biter biscuits - she can hold on to one end and chew on the other. They are a mess, but they keep her occupied for awhile! All in all, it's been a good couple of weeks of eating for our baby girl!

We're scootin'!

This is my daughter. She cannot crawl, but somehow she manages to wedge herself almost entirely under our sofa.

Did I mention that she likes Piglet?

So I found this fantastic bright red metal tub on clearance at Target for $5 the other day and I asked myself not "would I need a bright red metal tub?," but "how many bright red metal tubs do I need??" I bought only one, since I know it will be used someday when we start entertaining again, but in the meanwhile I thought it might be a good way to keep all of Mia's toys sequestered in the living room.

I popped Piglet in there and she found him peeking over the edge of the tub!

And then she proceeded to suck on his ear.

Unfortunately, she quickly decided that she wanted to know what else was in the big red metal tub and started grabbing at the edges...so we removed it before she ended up with the tub, and all of her toys, on top of her!

Family Photos!

Our first family photo shoot took place in May, and I'm finally getting around to showing off the family photos (there was some wait to get the final edits in from our photographer, Brooke Fanning, and further delay on my part). I gave some sneak peeks (here and here) earlier, as I received those photos, but here are my favorites from the remainder of the shoot!

Rock Project: Done! Finally.

We decided it was time to finally finish our rock landscaping project in the backyard, so we put in multiple hours on both Saturday and Sunday to finish things up.

Entrance, before.

Entrance, after.

In front of deck, not quite before, more like mid-way.

Our fire pit - with all of the extra rocks, we decided to add a ring of river rock around the pit.

Mia was also excited that this project was done - she was sick of being stuck in the stroller or buggy by herself while we worked!

6 months old!

Well, it's been almost a week since Amelia's half birthday, and as I sit down to write this post I realized how indicative that is of how quickly time is flying by these days! I can't believe my baby girl is 6 months old already! To summarize the last month, all I can say is that she is GROWING! She went in for her checkup (and more shots, boo) yesterday and while she weighs in at an average 15 lbs 12 oz, she is a whopping 27 inches long! That puts her in the 90th percentile for length! We're not entirely sure where that comes from - maybe grandpa Jon? - since both David and I are pretty average in height. She hasn't cut any new teeth this month, but her constant chewing and drooling indicate that more are definitely on their way. She is rolling all over the place, pushing herself up a bit, and moving around on her tummy, all just short of actually crawling. If she sees something that she wants, she figures out how to get to it! We started her on some rice cereal, which she seems to like well enough, and she's had a little bit of banana, which she's not overly excited about yet. She still LOVES her stuffed piglet and likes to suck on him or the edge of a blanket when going to bed. She's starting to figure out how to sit up without much support (although we have to put her in that position, she hasn't figured out how to push herself into a sitting position yet). She also likes to holler. A lot. She's found her voice and wants to be heard! Overall, we're really enjoying this stage - as she's much more interactive, but still fairly non-motile! The next stage will be here soon enough!

6 months.

4 months (just realized that I forgot to get a 5 month car seat photo - see!? time is moving by way too fast!)

4th of July

Spent the LONG weekend with both sets of parents at both of their lake cabins. It was fun to spend time with the family, but traveling ends up taking its toll on the entire family - Mia barely slept Saturday night, and didn't sleep well the rest of the nights, which meant that David and I are overly tired after our long weekend. Additionally, after being hugged and admired all weekend long, Mia is extra fussy today and refuses to play by herself. She wants to be cuddled and entertained constantly. Thankfully I've been able to get her down for a few cat naps, which allowed me to clean the house and catch up on laundry while I'm home with her (since we didn't have daycare available today).

Highlights from the weekend include meeting Daniel's new puppy, Cooper. He's a British black lab, 12 weeks old, and the calmest puppy I've ever seen. He slept under the porch steps the majority of the weekend, and he was scared of the water (even after watching Jonas jump in time after time to retrieve a dummy). He followed Jonas around the farm like mini-me.

Spending time with great-grandma Evie on Mia's 6 month birthday (more on that later).

Supper with the elder Fetts at the cabin on Fox Lake.

Listen to me, I'm 6 months old today!

Proof that Grandma B does exist - and holds Amelia quite often!

Like father, like daughter.

Video Updates

I have a few videos from my phone that I wanted to post, but just now got around to getting my phone hooked up to my computer! I don't have any video editing software yet (any suggestions?), and for some reason these videos are defaulting to the wrong direction. So if you want to see some cute videos of Mia, sideways, have at it!
